Family holiday 2010 - Lanzarote

Apologies for all the delayed email replies and answerphone responses but we’re now back in Brrrrritain and I’m all caught up after ten lovely days in Lanzarote.   This was our first visit to the Canary Islands but certainly won’t be our last, what a beautiful place.  Lanzagrotty it ain’t.

We stayed near Playa Blanca, most days were around 30 degrees, some slight breeze but most of it was coming off the Sahara so was warm.

Below, the Iberostar Papagayo - our hotel, I can highly recommend it - and the children went crazy for the Kids Club & Mini Disco - Chu Chu Ua dance anyone?!

Below, the girls get stuck into a good book.

Below, the view East from one of the bays by Papagayo beach, tastefully avoiding any sight of the nudists on the beach next door!

The below shot isn’t of a particularly nice beach but I like the blue doors of the fisherman’s huts on the right and those skies were amazing - a real clarity of light over there.

Below, the children were fascinated by this sculpture….for all the wrong reasons!

An afternoon with the G9

One of the perks of wedding photography being a seasonal beast is that I get the chance to get out and do my own thing in the winter.  Today the sun was shining, I was pretty well caught up on processing so I grabbed my little Canon Powershot G9 and went out for a couple of hours.

The G9 is a great alternative to lugging the digital SLR and various lenses about, it’s small, light, shoots in RAW, has full manual mode, a decent zoom range and can do macro when needed.

All of the below shots are out of the G9, it’s a small point & shoot so the lens quality obviously isn’t up to the Canon L-Series glass I usually use but for online viewing it’s hard to tell the difference.

Walking alongside the steam railway track I found a little brick hut complete with fireplace, I have no idea how old it is or it’s original purpose but it must have kept someone cosy (and from the looks of it someone had been inhabiting it a bit more recently too!).

This old lock on the door is pretty solid, unfortunately the other end of the chain isn’t exactly secured in the door, it slips over the hook allowing nosey photographers to stick their head in and have a look around.

The snowdrops are out in force as you can see from the below shot.  The above shot is the view directly above me while I was lying down in the wet moss photographing the snowdrops.

A few of the Autumn’s berries remain.  I guess the birds don’t like the taste of these?

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow…

Awoke on Sunday to a good covering of snow and a fair bit more fell over the course of the morning. I grabbed a few shots down at the lifeboat - it’s not often you actually see the snow settling on the beach as the salt usually melts it pretty sharpish but there was plenty there on Sunday.

After Lifeboat exercise it was then time to face the barrage of snowballs as I returned home and was attacked by William & Charlie, I think we managed to cover all bases - snowballing, snowman, sledging, snow angels, snow down daddy’s neck, snow down the back of daddy’s trousers, snow in daddy’s ears..etc, etc!

…this little piggy…

I had to take a photo of this on Saturday morning before I headed out to a wedding - my 5 year old daughter Charlotte came through to show me what she had quietly been doing for the last ten minutes - you always know when she’s up to something creative as the relentless chatter stops briefly!

She’s a lot more creative than I ever was, might have a good little trainee photographer in a few years time!
