OK, so this is the part where I tell you I was born with a camera in my hand, how passionate I am about photography and that my mantelpiece is creaking with photography awards…
Sorry to disappoint but I wasn’t born with a camera in my hand and my mantelpiece is actually creaking with jars of sea glass & polished pebbles we’ve collected from the beach (but I do love photography)!
I’ve been a professional photographer since 2005, constantly developing my craft and refining my style. I always knew that having a job you enjoy is one of the most valuable things in life, it’s not work if you love it! I spent nine years commuting to Norwich every day to work in an I.T. job – works for some people but not me. I need to have a creative outlet and the photography totally satisfies my craving for creativity, flexibility and freedom from the rat race.
I was born & bred in Sheringham on the North Norfolk coast and absolutely love this area. After ten years at Gresham’s School in Holt I spent three years at the University of Hull reading Applied Biology (not hugely useful for a photographer), spent a year in Australia, ran a pub for 18 months and had a year in the USA.
I saw some stunning places (living on the Whitsunday Islands in Queensland for 6 months was a highlight) but for me nothing beats the coastline of North Norfolk whatever the season. In fact my first ever paid photograph was taken in the Whitsundays – while on a humpback whale watching trip I got some great shots of a curious young whale coming right up to our boat, literally about 3 feet away. When I took the film to get it processed at the shop in Airlie beach that evening they asked if they could give me a few dollars to have one of the shots turned into a postcard to sell. I was stoked and maybe the seed to become a professional photographer one day was planted right there!
I have two children, Charlotte & Will, who enjoy life by the beach as much as I did as a kid. Whenever I can I grab a camera & get out along the coast or take my boat out to Blakeney Point to see the seals, do a spot of mackerel fishing or collect samphire. I love being on the water, so much so that I’ve been RNLI crew on Sheringham Lifeboat since 2000.
Anyway, back to the photography, I love the variety of weddings I shoot, each and every wedding is so totally unique. I shoot a maximum of 25 weddings per year, offering a boutique wedding photography service. Demand can be great with the limited dates available often filling two years in advance.
It’s important to have a good rapport with the couples I photograph, it makes a huge difference to the experience for everyone. Very few people actually enjoy having their photo taken so an important part of what I do is to ensure people feel happy & relaxed when looking down the barrel of my Canon. I’m certainly not one of those photographers who bark orders at people or pose them like mannequins.
The majority of weddings I photograph are in Norfolk and Suffolk although I am more than happy to travel further afield having shot weddings all over the UK including Oxford University, Cambridge University, Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons, Longleat House, Temple Church in London and Cork in Ireland. I am also happy to pack the passport and photograph destination weddings abroad.
What do I look for when photographing a wedding? My aim is the tell the story of the day through a combination of techniques and styles. While I do spend a good chunk of the wedding day capturing natural, reportage-style images I also feel that some loosely directed shots when it comes to groups (15 minutes max on the day) and great portraits of the couple are equally valuable. I love to shoot all the little details of the day, couples spend months selecting the items for their wedding day, finding new and creative ways to do these shots can be fun.
In order to create interesting images I’m always looking for visually appealing compositions and using the light in different ways whether it’s shadows, back-lighting, silhouettes, reflections or off-camera flash.
So why book me? Aside from the quality of the images, I am extremely conscientious and committed to providing the best possible service I can. While my price list does have set packages I’m very flexible and always happy to discuss your requirements – it’s YOUR wedding!
I think it’s very important that you can trust your wedding photographer, not just because you’re potentially investing a large sum of money in the photographs but also you need to have faith in their abilities both technically and on a human level. For this reason I do encourage people to meet with me in advance of the wedding day, ideally having a pre-wedding shoot, which is a great way for us to get to know each other and to allay any concerns about having your photograph taken!
To ensure I can offer the best service possible (and not be burnt out by October!) I limit the number of wedding bookings taken each year. The first step is to drop me a line, see if I am still available for your wedding date via the Contact page, email me on firstname.lastname@example.org or give me a call on 01263 821589 or 07941009745. I have a pdf information sheet with prices which I can email giving a full breakdown of options available to allow me to capture your perfect day.
I look forward to hearing from you!
